The Hospice Manager Development Program

In Partnership with National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization

The Hospice MDP is a comprehensive management training program providing helps managers develop the skills they need to meet the challenges they face in managing programs, systems and people. Rooted in the values of hospice care, the two-day foundational course is the “springboard” for a wealth of ongoing learning opportunities in the field of hospice management.

Extensive materials and resources are provided during the classroom experience, and managers have ample opportunity to collaborate with and learn from their peers. Following this course, additional in-person and online learning opportunities are provided to ensure managers’ ongoing professional development. The Course includes five learning modules:

  • Values-Based Hospice Leadership explores the importance of understanding and leading from hospice values;
  • Regulations and Standards for Hospice Managers provides an in-depth overview of the regulations and standards that undergird the provision of hospice care;
  • Leadership Style and Situational Leadership helps managers assess, strengthen and adapt their leadership style to be a more effective manager;
  • Interviewing, Coaching, Feedback and Evaluation Skills provides specific tools and strategies for supervising, evaluating, guiding and supporting staff;
  • Critical Thinking and Decision-Making addresses the manager’s role in problem solving and decision-making, teaching specific skills and strategies for effectiveness.

Developed by hospice experts, leaders and managers, the Hospice Manager Development Program is a developmental training program provided by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

Continuing Education for the Hospice MDP

Attendance for both full days is required to earn the Fourteen Contact Hours.  A copy of the completed Continuing Education Certificate must also be submitted.  This program will provide contact hours to RNs, LPNs, and clock hours for SWs attending the workshop. The program planners have no conflict of interest in regard to this program.  No commercial support has been provided for this program.  Approved provider status does not imply endorsement by the provider, ANCC, OBN or ONA of any products displayed in conjunction with an activity.

Ohio Council for Home Care and Hospice is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.  (OBN-001-91) (OH - 157, 4/1/2019)

Kennedy, MA, BSN, CHC, LNC,  is the Regulatory and Compliance Director for the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization.  She has over 25 years of experience as a leader and nurse in diverse healthcare settings in numerous areas of the United States, including Hawaii, and has worked in hospice care for the last 15 years.  The majority of her health care career has been dedicated to education, compliance, quality assurance, performance improvement, and program development.

is currently Associate Professor with Goldfarb School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri.  She teaches undergraduate students, and interprofessional education across several different professional programs at Washington University.  Currently she is incorporating ELNEC modules into current nursing classes. Kay has been a nurse for decades - and working with hospice and palliative care for 30 years. 

Turner West HeadshotTurner West, MPH, MTS, is the director of education and communications and director of the Palliative Care Leadership Center at Hospice of the Bluegrass. Turner has extensive experience bringing leadership and innovation to programs and operations aimed at improving care for the seriously ill.
